What are veneers?

Veneers are ultrathin tooth-shaped porcelain shells that Dr. Rendon applies to damaged front teeth. They can conceal your damaged teeth to make them look just as good — or better — than before. Veneers can help with the following issues:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Wear
  • Irregular shapes
  • Severe stains that don’t respond to teeth whitening
  • Mild alignment problems
  • Gaps

Veneers are usually used on the incisors, the eight flat teeth at the front of your mouth.

What is the process for veneers?

First, Dr. Rendon performs an oral exam and discusses the issues you’d like to correct. He then shows you a mockup, so you can see what your smile would look like with veneers. If you’re happy with the projected outcome, Dr. Rendon can get started right away.

First, Dr. Rendon prepares your tooth to hold the veneer by removing a tiny amount of enamel. Then, Dr. Rendon makes impressions of your tooth, which he sends to a laboratory to make your custom veneer. Dr. Rendon may apply a temporary veneer to protect your tooth until your permanent veneer is ready.

When your permanent veneer is ready in about two weeks, Dr. Rendon will bond your veneer to your tooth.

Are there any other options?

Minimal-prep veneers may be a good option if you only need minor changes or have small teeth. This type of veneer requires little or no enamel removal, which means you can remove these veneers in the future if you desire.

Another option is using composite resin. You can use composite resin to cover a tooth or do other jobs that veneers normally do. While it may not look as natural as a veneer and will stain more easily, composite resin is less expensive than veneers.
